Humane Pet Euthanasia by Dr. Lyle Brumley.

Hello. I’m Doctor Lyle Brumley. I own the Foxmoor Veterinary Clinic, located in Aurora, IL. I’ve been in practice for more than 40 years.

In this video, I’d like to speak on the subject of pet euthanasia.  It is probably the most difficult thing that I have to do with regards to my line of work. Putting a pet to sleep is very, very difficult. I know that it is also a very difficult thing for the pet owner to have to go through.

The problem is that pet euthanizing has to be done when the necessary time comes. The most important thing that I can tell you is that I am glad that we have the ability (as veterinarians) to be able to go ahead and to (humanely) put a pet to sleep.

Euthanasia is one of those things that I do not enjoy and that you do not enjoy. I watched my mother die at the age of 39. She had to suffocate to death because we couldn’t do anything for her. We knew that it was a terminal situation.

Humane Pet Euthanasia uses two injections to induce eternal sleep.

When I do a pet euthanizing process, I use two injections. The first injection is a mixture of a short-acting anesthetic and a sedative. It usually takes five (maybe ten) minutes for the pet to become completely immobilized. At that point, that animal has no comprehension of what is going on. The second injection is the medicine that actually stops the heart rate. That’s what actually puts the little pet to sleep. The animal won’t know it and won’t feel anything. Once it’s over, it’s over.

It’s a difficult process to perform, but at least we have (in veterinary medicine) the ability to do it.
