Dog  Spay Neuter Cat Spay Neuter by Dr. Lyle Brumley.

Hello. This is Doctor Lyle Brumley. I am the owner of the Foxmoor Veterinary Clinic (located in Aurora, IL).

In this video, I’ll be talking about the subject of spaying a pet and also the neutering of a pet.  In addition, to good medical reasons for spay neuter,  vaccination tag costs are usually lower and long term veterinary health care costs may be lower for geriatric animals by eliminating the risk of reproductive related cancers.

Neutering usually refers to the male (although it can technically refer to both the female and the male).

With regards to spaying. This means that we are performing a complete ovariohysterectomy on the pet. That means that we are going to take out both the ovaries and the uterus.

In the case of neutering, we are talking about the removal of the testicles.

The reason for this, first and foremost, is so that the pets cannot procreate. At the same time, there are other reasons.

In the case of the female: A female animal never goes through a menopause. They never stop having periods. The older they get, the greater the chance that (when they come into a “heat season”) they may end up with an imbalance of the hormones. This could lead to the female animal developing an infected uterus. If that should happen, then you are going to be looking forward to having an emergency surgery for that animal  while hoping that the animal lives. This is because the uterus becomes very, very full of pus at that time. That’s not a good thing.

When we spay a female, there is a reduction in the chances that the animal may develop mammary gland cancer. I have difficulty even thinking and remembering about the last time when I last saw a case of mammary gland cancer IN A SPAYED ANIMAL . This is because we now spay the dog and the cat before they go through their first “heat” period. That’s part of the reason for doing it early because then you don’t have to worry about certain cancers.

Concerning male animals: We neuter a male animals  by taking away the testicles because, when he starts to go though his puberty (and the male hormone is started and begins to secrete), he then becomes like a male and he gets “ready” for the female animal. When this happens, he wants to “mark” his territory. That means that he is going to lift his leg and urinate on that territory. He does this because (as you know) animals go from place to place, and they sniff everything that they can (and then they usually lift their leg in that area). We also definitely neuter the male animal  in order to help to control aggressiveness. A male with his testicles in tact (and having gone through puberty) can become quite aggressive. From a pet’s standpoint, a male animal  that is neutered is a much better pet to have around the house.

Those are some of the main reasons why we do the neutering and spaying procedures.
